Family law issues such as child custody, child support, alimony, post separation support, equitable distribution, attorney’s fees and absolute divorce are typically heard on the third floor of the Buncombe County Courthouse. It is important to note that the courthouse has an older section, which includes the tall, original courthouse built in 1928 and a newer section of the courthouse was completed in 2014. Family law cases are heard on the third floor of the older part of the courthouse. To reach these courtrooms, you travel through security at the front door, and head for the elevators down the hall to the right of security. Once on the third floor, there are two large courtrooms at the end of the hall. All of the family law judges generally utilize these two courtrooms. Keep in mind that many court events and even hearings may occur via Webex (virtually), so check with your attorney or look up your case in the e-filing system to confirm your information before heading to court.
While family law cases are generally heard on the third floor of the older part of the courthouse, issues of domestic violence are typically heard on Thursdays on the second floor of the newer part of the courthouse. You can reach these courtrooms by going through security and going straight ahead to the elevators or using the open stairs to the left of security.
Parking for the Buncombe County Courthouse can be found at the parking garage directly across the street from the courthouse. The street address for that garage is 164 College Street, Asheville, NC 28801. There is street parking available, but those spots are generally limited to 2 hours and you may be in court for longer than that, so we always recommend parking the garage or a local private pay lot.
